Wait, am I... browsing the GitHub explore page to comfort myself after a sad event? It's like social media but I haven't realized I'm addicted yet.

Love it when you get 5 hours sleep the night before something important. It's not a terrible amount of sleep, but I still worry to myself that it is.

A Blender render I did yesterday. Vaguely based on the cinematography of the original Utopia TV series.

One of my better friends is being evicted from their place in Orlando. They have a place to live, they just need some help getting there.

I just discovered a block of IPs that has been purchased by a white supremacist and all-round fascist from NZ, under the name of a fake Australian chemical precessing company, which he uses to sell VPS hosting services to far-right groups all across the world.

The worst thing is that there is nothing I can do about it that isn't illegal.

There is no better way to spend a Saturday morning than desperately trying to recover a partially overwritten filesystem.

Is it possible to run a machine on swap memory alone?

Controversial opinion: Journalism should always represent an opinion; If you have an idea about the what is or should be that you believe is true, it would be immoral not to try and convince others. I don't mean that the news should be biased and not present the whole truth, but that it should go further than just collating facts and actually interpret them.

Friendly reminder: "X as a service" is just a misleading corporate euphemism for "pay forever for not owning it".

"Software as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning the software".

"Games as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning games".

"Infrastructure as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning the hardware".

And so on.

There is no "cloud", it's just other people's computers

Scanning 90-110 year old books with... a cardboard box.

If you, or someone you know, could be considered to have expertise in the area of political trends within open source communities, let me know! I'm considering writing about the strange world of alt-right politics in open source.

Lost my irreplaceable wedding ring on Sunday, July 5th. Longshot but I thought I'd post this in case it's spotted. I believe it slipped off during hand sanitizer. Possible locs:

- Vernon's Dnr, Bedford
- Esquire Rst.
- The BLT trail
- Glenbourne Bike Park

🙏 for any reshares.

Been working on some CG scenes. Might make a webseries with my friends some time?

There is a real problem in the free software community and tech in general about homophobia, racism and sexism. The same thing happened in a popular Arch Linux Telegram channel, then they changed the channel logo but in a lot more violent. This is not OK.

Stimulus checks seem like an odd course of action in a world where a significant amount of shopping is done through international corporations like Amazon, rather than local businesses. When it was proposed that the NZ government could give all under 20's $500 ($300 USD), I started looking on Amazon for microscopes, not considering what local cafe to spend it at.

I realise I've never stated this clearly, so I will now. Please call me out/let me know, if I've said or inferred anything that is racist, ableist, anti-trans etc. I'm trying really hard to unlearn white supremacy, stop using ableist language etc, but I'm going to make mistakes. I'd rather know, so I can change that language/behaviour.

Is creating a 16GB swap partition a good solution to a memory leak? No. But is it a solution? Yes.

Deep Mind's new machine learning chatbot scores 91% as 'sensible' in conversation as the average human.

I wonder if there is a limit to how human a chatbot can seem without expressing other human-like characteristics. For example, does a chatbot need complex and genuine opinions about a film before it can have a 100% 'human' conversation about it? I'd guess yes because if it was simply generating typical responses then its opinion would break down at some point (eg. begin contradicting itself).
