Who still uses for general chatting?

I'm gluon at QuakeNet's channel, which is probably the most active general/nerdy channel I know of.

If this sounds alien, or you don't have an client you can use the webchat interface:

webchat.quakenet.org/?channels

@vascocosta IRC-user here! I've been using it for a very long time, back when everyone used it for just general chats. I'm only on Freenode now though. :) Drop me a message if you decide to join Freenode!

@vascocosta I am using IRC since the middle 90s - why should it sound "alien"? Its not for so called geeks or nerds, just for oldfags like me. ;)

@stumpi

I use IRC since the mid 90s as well hehe, so that makes me an oldfag as well. ;)

@vascocosta
IRC is my preferred means of communication. I'm architect on geekshed.net, where I'm pretty much only in the JB chat. Other networks I hop on, I try using newnix, unless it's already taken.

@vascocosta
I'm personally more excited for the Matrix protocol. But I don't mind IRC, Although I much prefer mailing lists.

@vascocosta I’m interested in IRC but I don’t know how to use my client.

@alex_

Have you chosen an IRC client yet? Which one?

In general you can try:

/server irc.quakenet.org

or if it doesn't work:

/connect irc.quakenet.org

and then join a chat room like this for instance:

/join

@vascocosta I have hexchat that came with my Linux distro. Can I ask, what is freenode? I don’t understand how the servers are distributed.

@alex_

You can think of Freenode as an instance of IRC, just like mastodon.social is an instance of Mastodon. There are many different instances (networks is the correct name) in IRC.

Contrary to Mastodon, IRC networks are isolated from each other, so you can only talk with people inside the same network, there is no federation.

To connect to the Freenode network do this on hexchat's input text box:

/server irc.freenode.net

and then join a chat room like this:

/join

@vascocosta see, I had no idea that you joined servers using text commands. This is so helpful. Thank you.

@alex_

You can also use the GUI, by choosing network list from the menu and selecting Freenode.

there is federation between irc servers in the same network tho

@tomas

True. Although it happens through a centralised hub usually.

@vascocosta I'm on freenode and SDF and use IRC to hit my slack channels. IRC is the best

@vascocosta
I still occasionally use IRC. I'm on Thinstack, a small network run by a group of Canadian friends.

I go by Meta_Ridley on there and my own channel is #ridley's, a virtual bar.

@vascocosta I still use irc, like a lot. I’m generally on a server through ssh or on freenode, but in all cases I’m on irc! I’ve used irc for over a decade now and I don’t see myself quitting it anytime soon. Irc has much more resiliency than discord imho.
