“Mr. McCourt’s vision, where individuals own their data and control how it’s sold and used by companies.”

inkl.com/a/bGyBaksLNmL

Mr. McCourt can kindly fuck off.

The reason you must own and control your own data (aspects of your self) is so no one else owns and controls it (you), not so some billionaire asshat like Mr. McCourt can create a marketplace for it and take a cut.

Don’t fall for these fauxternatives.

Billionaires will not save you.

We can only save ourselves.

I'm going to say this again, because it needs to be said: there are a lot of ethical problems & toxicity in tech-- but that doesn't mean you're not allowed to find joy in technology, or in *making* things.

It's not wrong to seek out happiness in your own little corner of tech.

xmonad success (long)

What I've learned today is that it's always good to look for many sources if you have problems or just want to learn things.

First I watched DT's awesome xmonad video, and I just couldn't make xmobar appear. I searched for the last few days, and I wanted to solve the problem based on his config.

Instead I should have looked for another solution entirely, and infact I've found this:

https://superuser.com/questions/470067/what-is-wrong-in-this-xmonad-configuration

Now my xmobar works perfectly! Onto ricing and other stuff. (tomorrow)

I have to say I feel that xmonad is faster in some regard than dwm, or maybe my config is not that complex.

I also re-installed xmonad xmonad-contrib and xmobar from the Artix community repo. I don't know if that helped at the end (probably not).

I am really happy right now. I worked 3 days on this, and at one point I just logged out and went back to dwm. However I felt that I was close to making it work, and I did.

Xmonad and haskell is not really for me as in "I am not a programer and I am way over my head with this", but I will make this work for me. My setup might not be as flashy like some others, but at least I can learn something.

What an adventure!

Lots of thoughts after the #emacsconf and I'm still not sure I got all of them down...

But here's a taste:

....Emacs doesn't come with tech support, it comes with a manual. It's geared toward responsible individuals who can handle a computer without a babysitter. That's why Emacs is not just technology, it's a lifestyle. It's a proud discipline and a responsibility.

Probably my last promo post (thankfully).

After 45 books, I finally wrote a book on how to be a better writer. The Kickstarter ends in 9 hours.

Thanks to stretch goals, backers get 2 books, a couple essays, and the book has all the trimmings.

Some "thinkers" want to present the choice of not vaccinating as a democratic choice akin to unhealthy eating. This is an inaccurate analogy.

An accurate analogy is that not vaccinating yourself is like drunk-driving. Sure, you are highly likely to hurt yourself, but you also might kill an entire crowd of people because of your recklessness.

If not vaccinating is ok, drunk-driving is also ok.
