This looks like a good tutorial on openvpn...

Your own OpenVPN, or: How to make all WiFi hotspots trustworthy

If you normally browse the web (and you don't block ads), you've probably already seen hundreds, if not thousands, of advertisements for "VPNs" or "VPN software/subscriptions" -- how you "need" one to have any kind of privacy, how "they" can track you everywhere if you don't use one, and so on. And

Sorry, I'm reading too much news... here's another :

"Coastal towns would benefit from an oil spill in the pristine Great Australian Bight because the clean up would boost their economies, energy giant BP has claimed as part of its controversial bid to drill in the sensitive marine zone.

BP, which has since withdrawn the drilling plan, also told a federal government agency that a diesel spill would be considered “socially acceptable”."

Not living in the States, but this is fairly scary:

Perhaps the voters want to pre-emptively ask the committee members whether Facebook's contribution will mean a soft hand... Encourage the committee to prove that the contribution was not a bribe!

Alright fixed it.... I just learned that the rpi zero can be powered via its USB too. Also proved again that doing anything of value after having a few drinks at work, and while sitting in a dimly lit, atmospherically pleasent, room, is a futile excercise.

After plugging the HDD and the power into the right spots, everything works fine....

Off now to configure shared space and fstab and .... proving again that nothing is ever been learned, EVER!

Hmmm, ran into an issue. My RPi zero doesn't see the external Seagate HDD I connected... The HDD status light comes up and flickers a couple of times, but then goes dark.

When connecting the HDD to my laptop it works fine. The internet is telling me that this might be a power issue, however the HDD has its own power supply...

Anyone any ideas? Powered USB hub?

Just set up a rpi zero. You can configure the system when setting up the sd card so that it automatically connects to your wifi and that ssh is enabled....

Took a few minutes of searching to figure this out. Pretty cool. Already added syncthing and connected my laptop :)

Next will get a usb to micro usb cable to add a usb hard drive and set it up as a NAS as well

Just stumbled across lynis, an open source security auditing tool... just ran it and while some of the recommendations probably aren't useful for a personal machine, it could be a nice tool to maintain some awareness of some important practices:

Has anyone else more experience with it?

@panda during the original intent of mastadon was to log into the instance you want to toot at for the specific topic but watching other instances that seemed to go right out the window lol. I think linuxrocks has been one of the few that has always had a main topic.

@panda
I don't think this is possible. It's more like a set of communities. You always start with your own bubble then follow others. Everyone is in the Federation, but you can only have one home.

One workaround is multiple accounts. Another is to join one then follow many people from other instances you want to see.

I understand that mastodon pods like linuxrocks.online are meant to be like subreddits... how do I subscribe to other ones? I found tags but is there a way to combine multiple instances?

Finally I’m completely analyzing my google data! The 1GB position file were every 10min my location was stored creeped me out yesterday.

@panda Using them reduced the nowadays totally bloated web to its real content. I just see the text without scrolling, promotion pics I don't want to see, JS crap and ads.

Interesting. I got a complete data export for my near to unused #Facebook profile. Started using FB in 2012 and stopped in 2013. Still, I keep the profile to prevent name grabbing.

The dump contains all IPv4 and IPv6 addresses I ever used to connect (I recognized some of the subnets), all browser agents, timestamps and ... wait for it ... session cookies.

If you ever used FB or still use it, I recommend you should do the same.

@architect @andru @Ghosty thanks for the advice, might check out some other options then. I guess the router project has to wait for a bit longer 🙂

Oh and on the topics of rpis, anyone who tried one as a router?
