@kelbot Now I'm gonna have to boot up my #pocketchip and install #tootstream on it!
@kelbot this is an object of beauty!!!
@kelbot that is terribly cool
@kelbot Oooooh, I could use that for my PocketCHIP!
@kelbot o i see my toot in there omg hi 👋
@zellk
😎 Hello!
@kelbot Oh cool, that thing is a) real and b) bigger than I thought. Is it, well, usable? (Besides serving as non-stationary toot machine )
@xeno
It really depends on what you plan on doing with it. As a general traditional computing/consumption device I would say not really. If you love tinkering and experimenting with electronics and linux then yes, it is a fun little device.
If the idea of customizing your linux install and getting your soldering iron out and adding extra functionality to a computer sounds fun to you. This is a very cool computer that was designed to encourage just that.
@kelbot Thanks for the write-up. When I first saw this thing a while back I thought that it could be useful as some sort of emergency terminal. Would you say the buttons help with typing shell-ish things compared to a touch screen on, for example, a mobile phone?
@xeno
It may not be any faster than typing on a phone but I do like that when I need to type something I can still see the whole screen. I find it really annoying one smartphones when I lose half my screen to the keyboard and it reflows everything in the terminal and jumbles it up.
@kelbot Yeah, I also do not really use my phone to SSH around because it is just very uncomfortable for the virtual keyboard taking away almost all of the screen.
Nice idea with tootdisplay :)
Could also be handy to attach something like a BME680 for environmental readings on-the-go…hmmm
@xeno
It has a headphone jack but no speaker. It's a relatively easy project to add a small amplifier and speaker that fits in the existing case. I am about 2/3 of the way to finishing that mod on mine. I'll post it here when I finish.
There are exposed gpio pins at the top as well so you can easily connect other electronics like leds & sensors. I was considering trying to add a small separate i2c oled screen to the top to scroll some sort of info (maybe toots?) when the main screen is off.
@kelbot What is this absolutely marvelous device?
@kelbot Wow. I want this so much now (。♥‿♥。).
@kelbot are those topre? :3
@kelbot this is so cyberpunk
@kelbot this is sooo aesthetic!!
@kelbot bizare comme telephone portable.
@kelbot i'm making tiny little screeching noises right now. that is awesome!
@kelbot how’s the performance when running console apps in thus like this?
@viv
Pretty good considering the brain in this device is a $9 single board computer. Most terminal applications run well on even the weakest semi-modern systems due to skipping the massive overhead of a GUI.
@kelbot witchcraft!
@kelbot very nice
@kelbot I haven't tried tootstream on mine yet. What do you think?
@ajroach42
Seems pretty good, though I haven't used it extensively yet.
@kelbot I saw that on the Lunduke show once! It looks so cool!
@kelbot that's illegal
@kelbot I need this.
@kelbot I'm thinking about buying this pocket chip. Is it worth buying this? I want to use it as an some kind of Linux mobile device to code/write a little!
@Ghosty I have not regretted buying it. It's not necessarily something I depend on day to day but it's fun to play with and modify.
If you're going to do much typing I would definitely plan on using an external keyboard. The built-in keyboard is ok for navigating and typing short commands but you won't want to do anything extensive on it.
@kelbot Okay! Thank you!
