Rant about family and social medias.

My mom was involved in an accident last weekend. I found out about it days later, by accident..

Apparently it's the norm to make a post about it on Instagram and expect everyone to find out about it there. The only issue is that I don't have Instagram.

What annoys me is that my family and friends share everything there and I'm always left out in the dark. I seriously don't know a bit about anyone anymore because I don't want to use unethical platforms. :/

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund wow I can really feel that pain.

Not having WhatsApp is the default option.
Not having Instagram is the default option, etc.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund out of curiousity:

is it possible to bridge a single Instagram account into RSS?

Rant about family and social medias.

@saxnot There's services like web.stagram.com which lets you follow public accounts via RSS. It seems to be shutdown now though, I guess (?) Instagram got to them as well.

Rant about family and social medias.

Vielleicht verdienen manche Leute keine Parser.

@hund (translation of previous toot)

Maybe a hack with IFTTT or NodeRED is possible?

Or one has a dummy account which is then used to automatically pull the account page, look for diffs and then email that diff or something.
Some sort of wget | parser | mail ?
The parser is probably somewhere on GitHub already.

It's still a lot of effort...

One have to question oneself weather or not it makes sense to put so much effort into reading walled gardens.

@saxnot I don't think so. :) I would rather be alone than part of todays issue.

@hund wise choice.

Information on these platforms has a low half life. Meaning that most of the "news" will be irrelevant in the next few days.

The attention economy grinds those people. It grinds their emotions for a cheap shilling.
It's horror.

I don't want a computer system to hammer low emotions into my head all day no matter how much they pretend that this is a "community". It's not a community. There's no social contract.

Reddit/Twitter/Instagram are no community

Car crash

@hund consider:

Was the car crash of your family /that/ big news?
Were there any injury ("family news")

Or was it just "the car broke down/someone made a dent" (which is not that newsworthy in extended circles of family)

Car crash

@hund you don't need to give me the answer.
You can answer it yourself to consider the news which the people close to you give Facebook.

My car recently broke down and needed towing. I said it here on the fediverse in toots which were followers-only (which were garbage collected by my forget script 7d after writing). I haven't said it as a standalone toot tho. I wrote something along the lies of "good discussion ; can't answer ; getting towed rn".

Car crash

@hund the latter sentense sais a lot about how the Fediverse operates as a discussion platform.

It's different than modern twitter. It's more like a mobile-friendly forum without hyperstructure.

Rant about family and social medias.

@saxnot @hund ich wusste gar nicht, dass du auch Deutsch sprichst. Toll!

Rant about family and social medias.

@saxnot @hund You should be able to use github.com/RSS-Bridge/rss-brid and get an RSS feed off an Instagram account. I use it for FB and twitter #rssbridge

Rant about family and social medias.

@returntrip @saxnot The issue with those services is that they only work for public accounts and they make it worse for us in the long run. :)

Rant about family and social medias.

@returntrip @hund that's nice

Rant about family and social medias.

@saxnot It really sucks. I can understand that it's "inconvenient", but to be completely left out because you try to be a good ethical human who cares about mental health is just wrong.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund it's a failure by your family.
They have not yet understood the basic principles on how the free internet works.

I'm not sure weather they can be blamed.
I'm not sure.
Immanuel Kant is sure. He blames those who can't free themself.

Rant about social medias.

@hund I'm also the social outcast when it comes to commercial "social" networks like Whatsapp. I hope more and more people will use free alternatives.

Rant about social medias.

@andre I hope so to. :) I also hope it would stop being an requirement with any social media at all, open or not.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund I totally agree. my family all use whatsapp and I'm the outsider as I won't. so like yourself I'm not privy to family events

Rant about family and social medias.

@speaksthegeek That sucks bud. :/ Have you tried making them try out something like XMPP?

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund sadly my family are as technically inclined as hamsters.

my mum has a melt down when I try to explain the difference between an APP and a Browser.

Rant about family and social medias.

@speaksthegeek Haha! They're as knowledgeable as the average user then. :)

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund thats how they get you. I still have a fb because I have friends on their from another country that I talk to. Funny thing is I originally made a fb account when I was there because everyone used it. Luckily I can get away with only having messenger on my phone. I get your problem though my family is kinda the same with fb. Luckily most important stuff I either get told or they say it in the family whatsapp group (yeah whatsapp is owned by fb I know)

Rant about family and social medias.

@willywonkball It's weird how it works these days. :)

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund this is terrible.

Rant about family and social medias.

@rgggn Yeah. :/

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund

That is sad...
I have never understood that mindset really. Social medias is destroying relations instead of building them.

Rant about family and social medias.

@selea I don't blame social medias, I blame the people who can't use them. :) I have always like social medias and I have been using them since the 90's and look at me.. I'm, err.. perfectly fine! ;P

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund

I actually blame social medias (those who are made to be addictive like fb).

Rant about family and social medias.

@selea I have never understood how it can be made addictive. I'm happy to be enlighten though. :)

Sorry for your mom. Hope she recovers soon.No comment on how social media used :)I still retrieve posts from Instagram via Atom/RSS. https://rss-bridge.cheredeprince.netso in case, you want to miss any family event, subscribe to family members via feed :)@hund

@noor Thanks! To my understanding, those services only work with public accounts? I'm not sure I would really want to use them anyway. :)

Guess, there is option or other service which you can pass username/password to retrieve following account.

not sure

Good that you not opting IG. @hund

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund I had a family member pass away, and the surviving spouse used only #Facebook to notify anyone. Then got mad at me for not responding, even though s/he knows I'm not on Facebook. I wept and mourned, I sent a car and flowers, but I still haven't joined Farcebook - even to hear from family members who don't bother with e-mail, snail mail, phone calls, or text messages.

Rant about family and social medias.

@Robin Wow, that's sad and unfortunate in more than one way. It's weird how the new norm works. :/

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund My condolences, I hope your mom is OK.

I completely feel your frustration. I deleted my FB account many years ago because I want to be notified about things old school. It actually worked, but it took a long time.

My wife re-opened her FB account a few months ago, for a myriad of reasons.

Now we no longer receive information old school anymore

Its completely frustrating.

Rant about family and social medias.

@matt Thank you! She's doing alright now. :)

That sucks! It's weird that we are the outcast for choosing the social, interactive and personal way of communicating.

People are too lazy. We should have never invented the Internet. :P

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund @matt
I avoided this issue by never having made an FB account on the first place. That made it a little easier probably because family and friends have never had to relearn how they interact with me.

Rant about family and social medias.

@kelbot @matt I wish that was the case for me as well. :)

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund @matt
Early on I got quite a few remarks like "You're not on FB?!" Or "why don't you just get on FB?" After a while they all realized that I felt strongly enough that it was useless to try to convince me.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund same here. Pretty sure one day someone's going to die and I'll find out a month later.

Rant about family and social medias.

@malin It's funny because it's true. :(

Rant about family and social medias.

@malin @hund Good to know your mom is doing alright now @hund . In my family only i'm in the deep side and others are on regular surface but it doesn't matter, everyone get what's happening in all of our families. If one person get anything about any of our families we all get know that at the same time.

Rant about family and social medias.

@dru18 @malin That's good! My family lives far apart from each other.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund @malin same here too. It's just because some of us contact each other daily.

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund
I can understand you, a bit,
I don't use Instagram either, still use whatsapp

I see my friends infinitely scolling and tapping this app, I don't want this addiction in my life.

I would be very happy if I would be able to use instegram, more ethicly,
Like:
How newpipe legacy uses YouTube, without using their JS dependencies. It takes only the necessary data from YouTube.
much better than using youtube itself, with infinite scrolling and all of that...

Rant about family and social medias.

@techit It would be better if you could get your friends to use Pixelfed! ;)

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund
Which intence..

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund by the way, it is terrible that no one talked with you, you know, there are still phones in this world, and it isn't that hard to pick up the phone sometimes, and talk with a family member, a friend or whatever.

We need, and will make the diffrence.

BTW
Have you tried convincing a family member, ir a friend, talking with you using xmpp, which you'll host by yourself?
It would be much easier for both of you...
And much more ethical than whatsapp

Rant about family and social medias.

@techit Thanks! I have converted a few to use XMPP, but it's basically only one who share things with me in person via private chats.

The norm is to share everything publicly on their social media accounts. :S

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund i feel like when sharing stuff that way it kind of becomes weird anyway. Like if something happens I like people to know in person or direktly communicating. Peopleaee weird

Rant about family and social medias.

@ChrisTalleras I agree! It's really weird.. Like "Oh crap, grandma died, let's Instagram it!". :|

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund
Same situation. Everybody is on Facebook and Whatsupp. I told them they have to use Wire if they want to be in touch with me. It did the trick. That said, Wire has problems too (reliability, performance), so I'm open to a better alternative.

Rant about family and social medias.

@istvan That's great! How about XMPP? :)

Rant about family and social medias.

@hund
It's good, but you need a server for that and they won't join linuxrocks :D
The Librem One service seems to be very promising.
