The Librem 5 phone looks only more and more promising. :linux:

@hund
"Power consumption is a very important factor to take into account, but so is battery capacity and printed circuit board arrangements, and we don’t want to sacrifice battery life for a few millimeters of thickness."

I'm happy to read this.

@kelbot Yes! It's nice to see a company who actually knows what's up for once. :D

@hund

I was a little confused by the comment suggesting that multitasking won't be a part of the phase one shell design.

It's Linux. Isn't multitasking baked in?

@RussSharek @hund
If I had to guess I think they are probably referring to multitasking in the gui sense. With the gnome mobile shell being so brand new I bet there just isn't enough time to get a multitasking UI ready.

It's possible that plasma mobile could have multitasking working sooner since it is further along.

@kelbot @hund

Makes sense. In no way diminishes my excitement about it!

@kelbot @RussSharek They're going through phases and focusing on different things, I'm sure they have time to implement multitasking until next year when it's supposed to be released. :)

@hund @kelbot

I was merely curious what limitations they are actually describing. If I'm looking at app A, and there is no multitasking, does that mean app B cannot notify me?

I don't care what the answer is, just seeking clarification.

@RussSharek @kelbot It's more like progress rather than limitations. :)

@hund
Looks like they're doing everything right so far that consumers have always wanted. Super exciting post, hopefully the demand will be good enough to where supply picks up and drops the price.

@garlickyvampire Indeed! I really hope this goes well. It would be nice with a secure phone considering the climate we're living in these days.

@hund It's just too big and 18:9 aspect ratio is also questionable.

@STP_KITT I just hope they don't go beyond 5,5". :)

@hund I'm super excited about it. I should start saving up now.

Is the mobile version of gnome available for testing anywhere?

@kde mobile looks very promising too.

@hund I wonder why they are designing a new Matrix based IM and calling app. Are there no existing applications that can be adapted?

@nick0515 This is a true Linux phone, not Android. They're basically starting over with something new.

@hund no I meant is there not an existing compatible application that could be adapted.

@nick0515 @hund - My understanding is that they’re taking the Fractal desktop app and configuring it to fit on a mobile screen. wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Fractal

@nick0515 @kde Same here! :D I know that you can try Plasma Mobile, but I haven't heard or seen much from the other side through.

@hund Thank you for the update. Good choices! Indeed battery life is more important than slimness.

@hund Only: will chamfered edges not hurt your hand when holding the device?

@KeaW I think it's the perfect balance. If you make it too round it will be slippery like a soap basically.

@hund I smell a platform emerging, and while that will be seen as a positive by a lot of people, as a recovering Apple user I’m not really looking to lock myself into another one at the moment

@djmoch How can one lock themself into a open house with no locks on the doors? :)

@hund I particularly noticed that they’re designing their own Matrix-based messaging service for use across their devices. One hopes, being Matrix-based, that it would be open and usable on other platforms, but they didn’t say it would.

@djmoch They could have been a bit more clear. They're making a client for Matrix, you can read more about it here: matrix.org/blog/2017/08/24/the.

@hund That’s good news then! Hopefully Purism is able to do what Canonical couldn’t in terms of making a really great, truly open-source Linux-based smartphone.

@djmoch I think they can. Canonical made a Ubuntu-phone, while Purism is making a Linux-phone, if that makes sense. :)

@hund I think I get your meaning, although the latter sounds like a bigger challenge to me

@djmoch They're not completely alone in this though, they have help from both GNOME, KDE and Matrix so far. They feel more organized and they also have a nisch; privacy. While Canonical didn't offer anything new to the game worth sacrificing peoples current ecosystem for. :)

@hund That all makes sense, and I’m glad it’s working well and hope that continues
