@r3pek thanks for the recommendation again, Ubuntu Budgie is what I went for in the end, and it feels *so* great. It almost makes me want to move away from Elementary on my personal laptop as well! funny, I just installed Budgie on my new laptop at work and now I almost don't want to use my Elementary laptop at home anymore -- considering switching. there are just so many things that work better in Budgie, and they work right out of the box, like the global menu that I was waiting for someone to add to elementary for over a year, just works in Budgie!

Read this. This article pretty summarizes what I see every day. And when I criticize it, half of the audience doesn't understand my point. They are simply to young and grew up with smart phones and fast lines.

"Software disenchantment": via

@matt never! especially now that Firefox is great again

@comphys @pkok @peanutbutter144 i have used keypass for a while before moving to lastpass. but i never really figured out how to get a multi-device system set up. syncing the keypass db between devices would be nice. is there any local password manager that can p2p sync with my other local devices? also i got annoyed with the keypass ui and the confusion about the different versions (keypass vs keepass vs keypassx etc)

I may be forced to resign from Alpine, because I cannot see an ethical path forward that allows myself to contribute to a product Microsoft consumes in their attempts to promulgate Linux to an “app you download from the Windows Store.”

Where I am from, you don’t negotiate with terrorists, and Microsoft continue to terrorize many projects, companies and individuals with their software patent portfolio.

There is a strong reason why at work, we will only ever touch free software when building solutions for our customers. This is because software freedom is the most important concern when providing infrastructure and solutions to the most vulnerable among us. Software freedom keeps them safe.

To assist Microsoft in their efforts of promulgation is to assist them in their ongoing efforts to undermine software freedom. WSL is a trojan horse. It is not our friend, and we should not tolerate it’s consumption of our distributions.

lenghty #introduction ahead

hi, i’m a fan of free software and decentralized system, which is why i dreamt of using linux for a long time (I remember trying Debian around 2004 but failing). so i was very excited to make the final switch last year by installing elementary on my macbook, and now i can’t imagine ever going back. in my RL i’m one of few linux advocates surrounded by lots of mac users who laugh at my nerdery (and hardware issues), which is why i’m very happy to join this space! 😊 👋

the feeling when your plan to try out five different linux desktops tonight goes up in smoke because you can't find a single usb stick you can use.

I swear I'll never buy one of these fingernail-sized drives again...

@r3pek I guess that's LibreOffice 6? maybe I should update it manually. The pleasures of Debian :)

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@r3pek nice, will check out ubuntu+budgie. the desktop looks pretty neat

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@Piejacker875 I'll definitely give Plasma a try for a day using the live version. so thanks for the recommendation

Related q: Is there still this huge divide between Gnome and KDE-based desktops? Or is it possible/sensible to cross between both application universes? It always feels like I have to "lock" into one of the two by chosing my desktop..

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@matt @Piejacker875 oh the other thing I should mention is that I' haven't been using Windows in almost 8 years and switched to Linux from Mac OS like 1 yr and a half ago. So the idea of using a taskbar and a "start" button feels kind of weird now 😂

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@matt @Piejacker875 second time I hear about Plasma, so I will definitely take a look. Thing is I've always been more of a Gnome user. And mixing Gnome and KDE apps is still a bad idea right?
