So what is the best Linux distro after all?

I'm getting a new laptop next week (Dell XPS13) and I'm excited and all that, but...

😱😱 WHAT LINUX DISTRO SHOULD I PICK?? 😱😱

So far I've been using ElementaryOS, but I think I'm ready for a change. On a different computer I've been using Debian + Mate desktop, but that feels a little old? Tried Gnome 3 before but that's too fancy for my taste.

What's a nice clean yet modern distro + desktop?

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka you could try Kubuntu. I really like Plasma 5, and Kubuntu really nails it

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@matt @Piejacker875 second time I hear about Plasma, so I will definitely take a look. Thing is I've always been more of a Gnome user. And mixing Gnome and KDE apps is still a bad idea right?

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@matt @Piejacker875 oh the other thing I should mention is that I' haven't been using Windows in almost 8 years and switched to Linux from Mac OS like 1 yr and a half ago. So the idea of using a taskbar and a "start" button feels kind of weird now 😂

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka you'll probably be happy with not-plasma, considering your computer habits. I greatly prefer traditional desktops.

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@Piejacker875 I'll definitely give Plasma a try for a day using the live version. so thanks for the recommendation

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@Piejacker875 @gka plasma is very, very customizable. Probably THE most customizable of the big DEs.

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka I'm currently running Manjaro with the XFCE desktop. Very simple and clean, but has a bit of a learning curve for all the different customization options. My recommendation coming off elementary is Mint w/Cinnamon. It's modern looking and simple for anyone who's used Windows previously. Plus, mint is Ubuntu based like elementary, so what you've learned with your previous distro will still be very relevant and useful to you.

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka Well, for distro you can get what you feel most confortable with. For the DE, I really like Budgie from @SolusProject

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@r3pek nice, will check out ubuntu+budgie. the desktop looks pretty neat

@gka It is. You have Ubuntu Budgie as and official flavor of Ubuntu (ubuntubudgie.org/)

@r3pek thanks for the recommendation again, Ubuntu Budgie is what I went for in the end, and it feels *so* great. It almost makes me want to move away from Elementary on my personal laptop as well!

@gka no worries mate :) Hope you enjoy it. Budgie has been my daily driver for more than a year now.

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka Gnome + Fedora works well for me.

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka Eh, I tend to recommend Mint for GUI/modern/easy/not unixy-seeking people. Lovely dark theming not far away.
Otherwise me myself am about to test Void Linux (I hear it's VERY Unixy:).

So what is the best Linux distro after all?

@gka Personally, even though I'm a distro-hopper, I almost always come back to OpenSUSE. Not sure why, maybe familiarity? I've tried a lot of them too. I feel it's a good mix of GUI based desktop and old-school Linux, with lots of new things too.

As far as DE, I mostly stick with Gnome, but do switch to Budgie. The latter seems to have gotten much better since I first tried it a couple of years ago.
