"However, this does not mean that you need to cut yourself off from the rest of the world and this form of localism should not be misunderstood for a hipsterist and reactionary form of escapism. Instead, such an approach is quite the opposite as it provides a possibility to actively engage with societal issues. "
I think you'll find that almost every localist tactic dismissed as "hipster" ...
"provides a possibility to actively engage with societal issues"
... and dismissing it as "reactionary" is a PR tactic by those whose financial interests are threatened by DIY ( or 'decommodification') and community supply chains.
Didn't read it, but their use of "reactionary" paired with "hipster" is bizarre. Reactionaries are conservatives who largely tend to be unsocial -- quite the opposite of hipsters. Even in their niche usage, #Facebook & privacy abuse is the status quo. Avoiding surveillance capitalism is not reactionary -- it's actually change-seeking progressivism to pimp privacy.
I installed the "Facebook Container" extension.
@strypey @gamliel You are working against your own interests when you give in to groupthink (https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-groupthink.htm). I had to work with a group of #Facebook users, & b/c I cannot be coerced to do something unethical, I refused to use FB. Their approach was broken. They had to beak their model & get msgs to me seperately.
I had the same experience, refused to use FB since 2010 and finally got some of my family to start using #Wire. In hindsight, I wish I'd chosen #Riot, since Wire have recently set up a US branch to take #VentureCapital, and deprioritized their server<>
server federation plans. @aktivismoEstasMiaLuo @gamliel
