After see this post social.coop/@gc/10016493658144 it made me wonder how us linuxrocks folks decide to name our hosts. For me, I'm a huge fan so my first 3 hosts were always going to be , and . After that I decided to just start using hostnames more descriptive of function, location or hardware, like for my based NAS, for my ODROID C2 and for my UDOO X86 box. How do the rest of you decide to name your hosts? Or do you just have one?

Do I need to have a banner that says "Authorized Use Only" or something like that? Or is that implied when only allowing authorization through public/private keys? Hmmm...

So every month I have a script that runs in cron that looks through my logs for failed logins to my SSH server. It grabs the offending ip addresses, does a quick whois lookup on each one and emails me the result. I know I could (and probably should) run fail2ban or something like that to keep repeat offenders from even getting to my server, but I was wondering if anybody out there ever emails the abuse contacts from the whois lookups. Send them the ip address and ask them to investigate, maybe?

Uptime update on my, apparently rock-solid, icecast streaming server running on my Odroid C2.

I was just looking at the uptime on 3 linux servers this evening and noticed my music server (odroid) has a pretty decent uptime. I haven't updated in ages because it has a special kernel supplied by the vendor that supports an attached lcd screen that currently runs htop.

Last night I dreamed about playing a nonexistent Die-Hard-meets-System-Shock Metroidlike platformer game from 1993 under 'Compaq Desqview' on an emulator in the house of dream-friends I have who I don't even know in real life

what is wrong with me

I mean everyone knows it was Quarterdeck, not Compaq, who made DesqView

It looks like when I have access to enough hardware, I turn into the hacker character out of an anime series. Literally 8 computers, 4 monitors, several networking devices, multiple keyboards and mice, lots of HDDS, tools, wires, books, and phones all at my desk.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, but I'm definitely not getting rid of this hardware just for it to gather dust.

Haven't played Elite Dangerous in a long while. Just fired it up again and remembered I was on my way to the black hole at Cygnus X-1. Just finished that trip.

While daydreaming about #retrocomputing, I'm thinking hard about getting a low power x86 based SBC and running legit #UNIX V7 on it.

I could get a nice little green screen VT100 (I actually think there's one gathering dust at work) and sit that on my desk and admire it.

@amolinux My current job "required" me to use Windows when I started. Eventually, I started dual booting and doing all my actual work in Arch. Figured I could boot into Windows whenever they wanted... which never happened. Eventually, I got down to just a Windows VM that I planned to fire up for them someday if needed... which, again, never came. Then I just didn't even have that and no one seems to have noticed. It's been years now. I wish everyone could be so lucky.
