"Decentralized" systems are susceptible to catastrophic failure if every node runs the same software created by a single entity. Open Source doesn't change this. *Social* decentralization and diverse implementations for a protocol provide better resilience and distributed agency.

EFF is deprecating the HTTPS Everywhere extension as HTTPS is actually everywhere and browsers are shipping their own native support.

My approach to web development is to stick to the basics and don't over-complicate. Avoid javascript, or if you must use it then keep it to small snippets - not megabytes of code.

Keeping things as simple as possible means that a web interface should be usable even within old browsers or shell based browsers. It avoids needing to be in a continual race with Google or fancy APIs.

People whose work laptop is their only laptop, why?

not even exaggerating tbh. i want to be the quiet old man with a long white beard who sits in a dark office all day that no one talks to unless shit's really fucked

then i quietly pop open a terminal, run a couple commands, and everything's magically fixed

and i keep quietly trudging away at my job in the back office that no one understands, but everyone knows that i can't be fired or the whole company collapses

would be a comf job

TIL that iphones regularly transmit the Mac addresses of devices attached to the same WiFi network to Apple. In addition to their geographical location of course.

So essentially you can be tracked across all locations where an iPhone is near you (and you haven't disabled your WiFi).

Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram all going down at the same time sure seems like an easily-understandable and publicly-popular example of why breaking up a certain monopoly into at least three pieces might not be a bad idea.

Somebody should tell Elizabeth Warren.

In the same way "carbon footprint" is a concept with some merit that has been weaponised beyond the point of return by gas companies, "echo chamber" places the blame on consumers of social media when the real problem isn't that they're completely surrounded only by opinions they've selected to hear, it's that the social media companies are bombarding them with things they'll find anger provoking or distressing

Protip: If you're watching video on your phone, it becomes much harder to notice resolution changes after you reach 480p. You can save yourself a lot bandwidth/data as well as a nontrivial amount of carbon released by setting your video quality to go no higher than 480p

Read some advice on drawing entangled poses today! Which is to start by constructing the heads and torsos first, since they are the heart of the pose. Once those proportions are looking good in relation to each other, figure out the placement of the limbs.

Tried it here and I think it really helped me sort out the process! I love drawing hugs, so that was relevant to my interests ๐Ÿ‘€
